Unknown facts ey, hey, hey, this is Vanessa and welcome to tellers of the untold I again, I think I just said it. But I’m Vanessa, your host. And today’s topic or this week’s topic is related to who other than Martin Luther King Jr, the, the one of the only people that people that majority of people know regarding black history, the most talked about individual and black history. But more importantly, I think the reason why we’re speaking with him today and this week is because the celebration of that holiday that we have on Monday for Martin Luther King, which I feel is amazing that they have this holiday, we should have more holidays regarding Black History individuals. But let’s you know, we got to start off some where. But what I want to talk to you guys a little bit about today is
a few things that maybe untold or unknown to a lot of people about MLK Jr. The first one is did you know? And oh, speaking of when I just said did you know, we in the documentary sankofa Chicago, which you guys gonna have to watch? And oh, we just officially launched the website at sankofa chicago.com. So check it out. But
throughout the documentary, we do these little kid quizzes. And one of them, you know, we have pictures of the different individuals. One of them is Martin Luther King, Jr. and out of the five groups of kids that we interviewed, everybody knew who he was, which wasn’t surprising. So that brings me to Fact number one, like something that you may not know. But Martin Luther King lived in Chicago. He lived in Chicago a few years before he passed away in the 1960s, to help with this segregation in the city with
freedom movement.
So that’s one fact one fact that you may not have known he lived in Chicago for about six months. Another one is number two, did it hitting number two is King’s birth name was actually Michael. It wasn’t Martin. It was Michael. Michael, he was born mark, Michael King, Jr.
and that interesting, because everybody keeps saying Martin Luther King Jr.
He also number three, number three fact is that
he entered college at the age of 15. Fifth teen.
So he was so gifted, that he was able to skip these grades from nine through 12. And then he was able to enroll at Morehouse, Morehouse College in 1944.
The other one number, what’s my interesting fact number four, King received a doctorate in systematic theology.
So
not sure if you knew that part. But he also attended graduate school at Boston University. And then he earned a divinity degree and Pennsylvania theology seminary.
Faculty number five. Number five is that King’s I Have a Dream speech, which everybody knows right? Was the King’s I Have a Dream speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial. So he spoke around it was like six years before his, you know, major speech of I have the Dream speech, where he actually spoke to a crowd that was over 15,000. They’re saying anywhere between 15 to 30,000, where he spoke in regards to voting rights, and it was like a speech to give us the ballot.
Number six,
Dr. King was in prison, so he was in jail for nearly 30 times 30 times.
So he was actually in jail 30 times a total of 30 times. But they’re saying and this is according to the king center that the civil rights leader went to jail 29 times, and he was arrested for acts of civil disobedience.
And then he was jailed also in Mountain gamry, as we all know,
so number seven, number seven, number seven,
Number seven’s a really interesting one I had no idea about, like, really have no idea about. So number seven is that in 1958, you know, about almost a decade before he was assassinated, he had an assassination attempt. And so what happened was, he was signing autographs. And this woman came up to him while he was signing autographs and said, Are you Martin Luther King, Jr? And he said, yeah. And so when he said, yeah, this lady with by the last name of curry said, and I quote, I’ve been looking for you for five years. And then what did she do?
She had a, she had a seven inch letter opener, and then jabbed it into his chest.
So, it was not good. He went to the hospital, and the doctor said, if you even move a little bit, this or even sneeze, you could you could die. So he underwent hours of surgery, emergency surgery after that attempt. And just like a good Christian King forgave the woman, he said that, you know, he doesn’t. He, he’s not about not, you know, the violence, but he called this woman mentally ill, and said, he has no ill will towards a mentally ill person.
So wow, you know, he’s a good person for that.

Number eight, Number eight, I know about because I did like this extensive research on this before. And it’s, you can you can get hours into this if you really, if you’re really into this. But so number eight is that King’s last public speech that he had, you know, in Memphis, in his speech, if you listen to his speech, he basically knows he’s about to die.

And, you know, it’s so weird, because I think that someone that, that, that, you know, he’s a preacher, and he is strong in his faith, and I kind of feel like, you know,

we might know that, or God might kind of give you some kind of, you know, thoughts or you have thoughts that that your time is, is ending, but go back and listen to that speech, but I’ll just give you just a snit bit of it. So he said, and I, you know, I’m not going to do his voice, but it says, his speech was like anybody. I would like, I would like to live a long life. longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that. Now. I’ve seen the promised land a met I may not get there with, oh, gosh, I can’t say this. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we as a people will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man.

number nine number nine fact is that members of Kings family did not believe that James Earl, you know, James Earl Ray acted alone.

Number 10. Did you know that Martin Luther King’s mom was hit by a bullet?

Yeah, she was hit by the bullet. But this wasn’t the same. This wasn’t the same incident in Memphis. Not when Martin Luther King, Jr. got shot. She got hit by a bullet. But it was on June 30 1974, where his mom was playing the organ at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. And this man by the last name of rose or
